About Austin Metro Area Condos

So where are all these Austin condo projects outside of downtown? The UT area immediately comes to mind with a large student population to house. Over 30 communities can be found in the more sub-urban Northwest Austin. Lakeway was originally envisaged at a retirement/resort community – so you can find a multitude of condo/townhome communities there that were developed starting in the 1970’s, as well as newer, more upscale new development.

South Austin has been home to condominiums and townhomes since the 1970’s as well. Higher-end developments can be found in the West Austin/Westlake area, and more affordable ones found in North Central Austin and Cedar Park. South and East Austin have been heavily targeted by developers in the recent past, and we’ve seen many former apartment buildings being “condo-ized” all over the city. From East to West and North to South, there’s a condo in Austin in your price range.

Austin Condos – The Numbers

You’d be surprised at the number of condominium and town house communities that can be found outside of downtown Austin. In fact, the downtown/urban loft and condominium development spurt didn’t really take off until the mid 2000’s. All together, there are well over 500 condominium and townhome projects across Greater Austin – and that number continues to grow. Outside of downtown Austin, condo complexes started springing up in “suburban” areas in the late 1960’s. Of course, what we consider “suburban” has changed since then, so you’ll find the newer construction occurring farther and farther from the city center.

Austin Condos – Lifestyle

Austin condo residents are as varied as Austin itself. The low-maintenance lifestyle appeals to both young and old alike, and is especially attractive to those who would rather spend their time enjoying Austin than mowing a lawn. One of the biggest benefits of condominium or town house ownership is the amenities that are provided onsite for the use of all residents. Want a pool, but don’t want to maintain it? Want a facility for hosting large gatherings? Many condo and townhome communities provide a pool and a clubhouse as part of the common elements. Some even provide tennis courts, hot tubs, and on-site gyms. Yes, there are Home Owner Association fees that have to be paid every month, but in exchange you get amenities, services and various levels of maintenance. Condo ownership is a great alternative for many homeowners, and one you should take under consideration.
