From the grasslands on the east, to the edges of the hill country on the west, South Austin is as varied as its terrain. Cozy, older neighborhoods, some built in the early 1900′s, offer old Austin charm. Or if you prefer, South Austin also has new, master-planned communities with all the amenities of today’s urban living. South Austin offers something for everyone.

What’s great about South Austin:

Often thought to be the end of town content to hang back and watch the rest of the city grow, South Austin has kept with its eclectic, cowboy roots. Home to the once infamous Armadillo World Headquarters, still infamous Hill’s Cafe, The Broken Spoke and the Saxon Pub, and the more newly infamous Continental Club and 1st Down & Stassney Sports Bar & Grill, South Austin is a mecca for the growing Austin music scene. If music is not your thing but nature is, check out Austin Botanical Gardens in Zilker Park or the Lady Bird Wildflower Center. For outdoor sports and recreation, any South Austinite will surely send you to Barton Springs for a lap in the spring fed pool which remains about 68 degrees year round. Other options include the Veloway for bicycling or rollerblading, several area parks for disc golf, or both private and public golf courses.

Schools, shopping, medical and more:

Most of South Austin lies within the Austin Independent School District offering many choice schools. An area on the western side makes up the highly rated Eanes I.S.D. South Austin is also home to St. Edward’s University which in addition to its traditional curriculum, also offers a personalized program of Adult Education called New College. Austin Community College has a number of convenient campuses located in South Austin. Southpark Meadows and the Hill Country Galleria are two of South Austin’s newest shopping opportunity centers. Both locations offer a variety of national chains plus more locally grown shops and restaurants.
