Many assume Rollingwood is a neighborhood in West Austin but it is actually a city. Rollingwood is located just of south MoPac on FM 2244 also known as Bee Caves Rd. Rollingwood is just on the cusp of the Westlake community. Though Rollingwood is in Eanes ISD and is a part of Travis County, Rollingwood has its own city council, city government and employment. It is in the 78746 zip code.
Rollingwood was established in 1955 and incorporated within Austin in 1963. Because of its proximity to downtown and the State Capital, Rollingwood has been home to such notable Texans as Lady Bird Johnson. In fact Lady Bird’s home overlooking downtown Austin drew much excitement when it was put on the market for sale. Many homes in this area were built in the late 1950s through the 1970s. Though their architecture is indicative of these eras, many have undergone extensive remodels making them more modern.
The residents of Rollingwood are very active in their community. One of the main forms of involvement is the Rollingwood Neighborhood Association. The association organizes various events, such as Easter egg hunts and parades, park cleanups, neighborhood watch and much more. Another active organization is the Rollingwood Women’s Club. The Women’s Cub is a non-profit organization benefiting the community, often their projects are related to area beautification.
Residents of Rollingwood enjoy being so close to downtown and minutes from Zilker Park while enjoying the feel and characteristics of West Austin. Rollingwood prides itself on maintaining the beauty and feel of the country while being in close proximity to downtown. The neighborhoods include large, lush trees, winding roads and gorgeous Texas hills. Many parts of this area have downtown and Ladybird Lake (formerly Town Lake) views.
